President’s Message
My Fellow Colleagues,
The past few months have flown by. There have been many activities that our members have participated in. I am privileged to be among such giving people. Please keep in mind that if you have a need for supplies, we are happy to donate them for a cause. Just contact one of the officers.
For now our sights are set on annual session. This year we get to host it for our state and show them what a great region we have. Please spread the word about the locale, so that we may have the largest registration yet!
Finally, I would be remiss if I did not take an opportunity to recognize our great webmaster Darlene Walsh. Since our last issue she has "retired" from OCCC. She has moved to Arizona, and now enjoys a life of leisure. She will remain on as our webmaster from afar, but she will be greatly missed. No longer a familiar face at the CE, or stop by to see her at OCCC. Darlene has touched many hygienists in many different ways. Even if she is not a paid professor she will continue to be a professor to many of us.

The graduating class of 2011 from OCCC was a very active class. They participated in coat drives, food drives, dress drives for a school of girls to receive prom dresses, and fund raisers for Smile Train. They successfully raised almost $2000 for Smile Train. We are very proud of them and welcome them to the profession.
In other news, Professor Meg Atwood, secured a grant that will put in place a program called ELMO. It will greatly enhance the teaching environment for both students and teachers. Well done!
DHASNY”S Older Adult Task Force Report
This is a program where its objective is to increase access to oral health and maximize the use of dental hygienists’ education and experience in focusing on older adults.
The task force on older adults will be developing: 1) Educational programs and resources to increase older adult’s awareness of the importance of good oral hygiene 2) professional education for hygienists and caregivers 3) initiatives to expand access to oral health care.
The task force is planning project-oriented actions that could be piloted in various regions of the state, provide opportunities to work with components and other entities, and be available as resource for information and replication elsewhere. This October to coincide with Dental Hygiene Month we hope to do our first pilot study in the Hudson Valley area. We hope to work with members of the Mid-Hudson component and dental hygiene students from SUNY Orange to assist us in a presentation discussing oral health in a local senior center.
All of the information obtained at our presentation in October will be presented by DHASNY at the Empire Conference in November. It is very important that this first pilot study goes well because it will be used as a template for future projects. We need volunteers to help in this project, this project is a great opportunity for us to grow as dental hygienist as we serve others, and get the recognition we deserve as we donate one hour of our time to the access to care problem.
The information to be presented will be provided to the dental hygienist with fact sheets and brochures to be handed out at the presentation to the older adults. In the future we hope to expand this project and do in service training for the caregivers of older adults.
Please volunteer an hour of your time for this project the Older Adults Task Force. Please contact us as soon as possible at either smilerdh6@gmail.com or ditom@citlink.net

A message from your District Director
Dear Colleagues,
I had the honor to represent New York State at this years’ ADHA Annual Session in Nashville. It was a rewarding and educational experience. To be a part of changing policy and advancing the profession of dental hygiene was quite grand. The hot topics of discussion were dental public health setting, direct/third party payment, and collaborative practice. A few of the policies that were adopted had to do with strict accreditation guidelines for new dental hygiene schools, and implementation of oral health diagnostic codes. To learn more about other important policies please go to ADHA web site www.ADHA.org. On the state level , DHASNY passed the limited permit bill. We are currently working on legislation for collaborative practice agreement and redefining dental hygiene practice act. To learn more about DHASNY, I encourage everyone to check out the web site, www.DHASNY.org. If anyone is interested in being a part of changing legislation and policy concerning dental hygiene please contact me at www.midhudsonrdh@gmail. Tracy Kurth RDH, District Director
